The purpose for the making of this film is arguably
demonstrated in several ways when relating to the uses and gratifications
theory.
For example, it could be argued that people are interested in this film as a way of achieving escapism, meaning they are able to escape from their daily life routines. Also, there is the theory that viewers enjoy such a film genre as a way of achieving socialization, or interacting with people of different groups such as those who are interested in a science fiction themed film.
Why did Disney purchase the rights of ownership to Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
The Uses and Gratifications Theory- The uses and gratifications theory suggests that when we choose a form of media, we have to fulfil one of the following:
Entertain- what you are consuming should give you enjoyment and also some form of ‘escapism’, enabling us to forget our worries temporarily.
Social Interaction- The ability for media products to produce a topic of conversation between other people, sparks debates.
We can therefore relate this to 'Maslow's Hierarchy of needs' and conclude that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would fit into the 'Self- Actualisation' category- consisting of traits such as morality, creativity, spontaneity etc.

Why did Disney purchase the rights of ownership to Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
It is argued how Disney purchased the right of ownership to the film ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as a way of achieving a financial benefit. It has been discovered that Disney paid $4 billion for Lucas film in 2012, gaining an $8 billion windfall from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the Mouse House's much-hyped reboot of the nearly 40-year-old space saga, according to one top Wall Street analyst.
The Uses and Gratifications Theory- The uses and gratifications theory suggests that when we choose a form of media, we have to fulfil one of the following:
Identify- being able to recognise the product or person in front of you, role models that reflect similar values to yours, aspiration to be someone else.
Educate- being able to acquire information, knowledge and understanding.

Social Interaction- The ability for media products to produce a topic of conversation between other people, sparks debates.
The purpose of ‘Star Wars: The force awakens’ is arguably therefore due to the fact that it is part of a continuation of the original trilogy. As the first feature films were so popular in the marketing and advertisement industries, it would make sense to have another film produced. JJ Abrams is also a huge Star Wars fan and therefore he might be interested in continuing the story with Luke, Leia and Han.

We can therefore relate this to 'Maslow's Hierarchy of needs' and conclude that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would fit into the 'Self- Actualisation' category- consisting of traits such as morality, creativity, spontaneity etc.
A second reason for the purpose of the Star Wars trilogy
film being created is that it was a way to make money. The film earned $28
million on just opening day, $100 million in just 5 days, and became the
quickest to gross $200 million and $300 million. Therefore Star Wars is
definitely an easy way to make money as it is the second highest grossing film
of the year behind only Avengers: Age of Ultron. The official website predicts
that Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens will make $1.8 billion.
It is also assumed that JJ and Disney want to right the wrongs of the previous prequels. As it is obvious that the original films were more popular with the target audience of the Star Wars films, it can be agreed that the making of the seventh film is a way of creating a more popular movie.

P2 B- Genre
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a 2015 American space opera
epic film directed, co-produced and co-written by J.J. Abrams. Space opera is a
sub genre of science fiction which emphasizes melodramatic adventure and space
warfare, along with often risk taking. Set mainly or entirely in outer space,
it usually involves conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities,
futuristic weapons, and other sophisticated technology. The term that “space
Opera” has largely displaced, “science fantasy”, is even more telling of the
genre’s natural hybrid status. One example of such futuristic weaponry includes the 'lightsaber', which are shown throughout the film in several colours to symbolise various different meanings. For instance, some are shown in the colour blue to indicate a Jedi Guardian, whereas others are in green to connotate a Jedi Consular. Below is a screenshot from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where a lightsaber is being demonstrated.
Much of Star Wars does deal with advanced technology
however, which seems to put it in the realm of science fiction. Presented is an image that was captured shortly after the creation of several characters in The Force Awakens, such as Chewbacca etc.

It is clear to audiences how the movie ‘Star Wars: The Force
Awakens’ is presented as a science fiction adventure action saga. The film also
blends elements of science fiction and fantasy, by for example using effects
such as magic and mystical creatures. The film also holds traits of space opera
which is featured, as it attempts to channel the western genre by using the
free lacing and heroic characters featured within the film. These are demonstrated in the screenshots from the film below.
